Upcycled Fishing Lures

One of the best ways to make fishing lures is by using items that you would often find in your recycling bin or trash can. If you’re looking for a practical craft they can make as a gift for their dad, uncle, or grandpa for Father’s Day, upcycled fishing lures are a fun project you can do with your kids. These are also a great choice for anyone that’s on a budget but wants to go out on a boat and hunt the waters for meat to feed their family. There are a few ways you can make lures out of everyday objects.

Bottle Top Spinner

To get started, gather the following supplies and tools:

  • 1 treble hook
  • Fishing line
  • 1 sea fishing swivel
  • 3 sea fishing beads
  • 2 split rings
  • 2 AA lead-free fishing shot
  • 1 beer bottle top
  • Hammer
  • Nail
  • Wood
  • Pliers

Making the lure:

  1. Start out by using the nail and hammer to pierce the bottle cap. Place the cap on the piece of wood to avoid damaging your furniture or counter. Place the hole where the crimped portion meets the smooth center of the cap, ensuring the hole is big enough for your ring to fit into.
  2. Add a second hole on the other side of the cap, directly across from the first. This one should also be large enough for a ring to fit through.
  3. Put one split ring in each hole. You can do this with your fingers, although this would be the perfect step to use your pliers for.
  4. In one of the rings, add the treble hook. Close the ring with your pliers.
  5. On the other ring, tie some line using a sturdy knot.
  6. Add the fishing beads and tie a knot so they don’t fall off.
  7. Using another piece of line in the same hole and tie on the swivel.
  8. Add the 3rd piece of line for the split shot and add it to the lure.
  9. Fold the bottle cap taco style and you’re ready to go!

Paracord Fishing Lure

Tools and supplies:

  • 1 fishing hook
  • 2” piece of paracord
  • Fishing line
  • Knife
  • Pliers
  • Lighter

Assembling the lure is easy!

  1. Cut off a piece of the cord about 2” long. Using your lighter, melt the cord a bit and pull out the inner strands. Twist counter-clockwise. You’ll see the strands starting to get fluffy.
  2. Carefully stab the hook through the solid side of the cord, making the sharp end exit where the cord starts to get fluffy.
  3. Put the line through the eye of the hook and wrap it around the cord to secure the hook and to prevent the cord from unraveling further. Tie off the line when you feel that it is secure enough.

Plastic Spoon Method

What you need:

  • 1 plastic spoon
  • 1 hook
  • 1 swivel
  • 2 slip loops
  • Paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Saw
  • Drill with a very small bit

How to construct the lure:

  1. The first thing you need to do is remove most of the handle from the spoon. About 1 cm beyond where the handle starts, cut the remainder of the handle off.
  2. Next, paint the spoon. If you have a silver one, don’t add too much paint, as the fish are attracted to the shiny metallic look. You can use a variety of bright colors to make it look like other lures.
  3. Using the drill, make a hole at the tip of the spoon and in the 1 cm remainder of the handle. Add a swivel at the handle end and a hook at the opposite end.

Hand Carved Wooden Lures

In the time before plastic was a common material that was used for, well, everything, most fishing lures were made from wood. If you have a friend or relative that loves to fish, making a hand-carved lure would be a beautiful and sentimental gift that you can give them for their birthday or favorite holiday. Making a wooden fishing lure does take some time and practice but with a little bit of effort and creativity, you’ll have a beautifully handcrafted lure that you can take out in your boat or gift to a special person in your life.

Making a Wooden Lure

You’ll need:

  • An appropriately sized block of wood
  • Pencil
  • Carving tools, sandpaper
  • Paint
  • Hook, line, other add-ons

How to make a wooden lure:

  1. First, draw your design on the wood and carve it out.
  2. When finished carving, use the sandpaper to smooth out the surface.
  3. Using non-toxic paint, paint your lure however you prefer.
  4. Decide where you’re going to install the add-ons and add your hook and other items you want on your lure.

All in all, creating your own fishing lure is a great way to cut down on your fishing costs, since you can use items you have around the house. If you want a great gift to give to a special friend or relative, learning how to make fishing lures will allow you to make a creative and personal gift they will love!
