Buying Guide

You might think that using a boogie board is as simple as just grabbing one off the shelf and hitting the waves. But there are some definite things that you should know before jumping into the water.

We’re going to go over some of the things you should be thinking about when you get a boogie board for you or for your kids.

How Boogie Boards Are Built, and What That Means to You

Just like everything, not all boogie boards are created equally.

While boogie boards are designed for casual beach play, that doesn’t mean you want to just to grab any old board without knowing what all the acronyms mean and how that will impact your usage.

Let’s start at the heart of the boogie board, the core.

The Core

The core of your boogie board refers to the material that makes up the overall board. Boogie boards have a long history, and are roughly descended from surfboards.

Like most surfboards, boogie boards are made of plastic foams, like polyurethane and EPS, which is better known as Styrofoam, or expanded polystyrene.

Polyurethane boards come in PU (polyurethane with a polyester resin coat) and PE (polyurethane with an epoxy resin). They are substantially cheaper to produce than EPS boards, but they’re a little heavier, resulting in a slower ride than an EPS boogie board.

Most boogie boards will be made of EPS, because it’s a lot lighter than the other options. Because they are lighter, they sit on top of the water a little more, which makes it easier to build speed as you’re riding a wave into shore.

The higher water profile also makes boogie boards glide more easily on relatively flat stretches of water, such as the areas after the waves crest over before the water hits shore.

What does this mean for you? If you want speed, which most people want out of their boogie boards, then make sure you get a board with an EPS core.

The Tail

The tail of your boogie board has a lot to do with how it rides in the water. A wider tail gives you more stability and also makes going over flat water faster.

When the tail combines that wide profile with a curve, then you’re getting more control over the board as well. If the tail has a sharp angle rather than a curve, then the board starts to loosen up and give a little more wiggle for turning.

If you’re using your boogie board for straight runs into the shore, then you should look for a gently curved tail with a wider aspect. This will give you the best combination of speed and control.

The Slick

The slick is the material that coats the underside of your boogie board. It is what is in direct contact with the water, so you want this to be as slick as possible.

There are two main types of slicks that are used in both body boards and boogie boards: Surlyn and high density polyethylene (HDPE).

The most common slick on a boogie board is HDPE, primarily because it’s cheaper than Surlyn is. HDPE is a little more rigid than Surlyn, but it’s a fairly close approximation.

Because boogie boards aren’t meant for high end competition riding, you should look for a board that has HDPE, simply because of the cost/benefit ratio.

On the other hand, if a boogie board won’t tell you what the slick is made of, then it is best to steer clear, as less durable coatings and materials may crack or break under repeated use.

The Top Deck

The top deck is simply the top of the board and is what you lay on when you’re riding a wave in. Look for a top deck that has a nice comfortable surface that also has some texture.

The reason you want texture is because that gives your skin or your wetsuit something to grip onto. Higher end boogie boards and body boards usually have smooth tops.

A smooth top deck may be pretty, but if you want to stop yourself from sliding off, then you’ll need to apply wax.

Wax can be used on top decks in place of textures or different materials. You just rub the wax onto the top and it provides a waterproof place for your skin to grip onto while you’re gliding in.

What’s the Difference between a Boogie Board and a Bodyboard?

You’ve seen the words boogie board and bodyboard used almost interchangeably and you’re probably wondering what the difference between the two is.

For the most part, boogie boards are used by amateurs and hobbyists to splash around and ride gentle waves in. A body board is used to perform tricks on waves, ride wave tunnels, and is almost like a short surfboard.

Boogie boards were invented in 1971 and called SNAKE boards, which stands for Side, Naval, Arm, Knee, and Elbow. Of course that name was pretty bad, so he started calling them Boogie boards.

The inventor, Tom Morey, eventually sold the license to make the boogie board, and soon everyone was cashing in. To avoid confusing their brands with the brand named Boogie Board, manufacturers started referring to their models as a body board, in keeping with Tom’s original name idea.

What that means is that every single body board is a boogie board, but not every boogie board is a body board. And nowadays, the divide just means that body boards are considered higher end models compared to a boogie board.

You should expect to pay about $350 or more for a quality bodyboard, while a good boogie board can be had for under $50. Bodyboards also can have stringers in them, which is a line of wood or fiberglass that adds stiffness and strength.

That’s a feature that you will usually never see in a mass-produced boogie board.

Here are some frequently asked questions when it comes to boogie boards.

Question 1? Are Boogie Boards one-size fits all?

No. Ideally, a Boogie board should come up so that the top of the board is even with your belly button. Of course, because boogie boards are mass produced, finding one that fits like this exactly can be difficult.

In that case, you should find a boogie board that’s as close to that as possible. Here’s a height chart that shows the size of boogie board you should be looking for.

Height Boogie Board Size
4’ and under 33 inches
4’ to 5’6” 37 inches
5’6” 39 inches
5’7 to 6’3” 40 to 43 inches
Above 6’3” 44 inches and up

Question 2? How Hard is it to use a Boogie Board?

Boogie boarding isn’t extremely difficult, but it does take practice to use. Some tips that make boogie boarding for the first time a little easier include:

  1. Aim for waves that are 2 feet or smaller.
  2. Make sure that you’re paddling in the same direction as the wave that you want to catch
  3. Start out in water that goes up to your waist at first, then as you gain more experience, head deeper.
  4. Always use your leash to attach your board to your wrist/ankle. This not only makes sure you don’t lose your board, it also protects other swimmers from being hit by a loose board.
  5. A pair of swim fins can really help control and maneuver your boogie board when you start heading into deeper water.

Question 3? Are Boogie Boards safe for kids to use?

A boogie board can be used by people of all ages. You want to ensure that your kid knows how to swim and is comfortable riding. It’s a good idea to supervise your child while they are riding and to never let them go out farther than you are comfortable with.

Also, be aware that rip tides can form and pull a child out past the break very quickly. Ensure that your child knows how to deal with this and that a boogie board is a great emergency flotation device.

If you are looking for a great boogie board, then you really can’t go wrong with the Wavestorm 40 inch boogie board. Not only is it a great board, the package comes with two individual boards, so you have one for you and one for your friend or family member.
